History

Started in 2003 by Marshall Cheatham ;an alumnus of St Andrews Hornets Drum & Bugle Corps, as a way to provide an after school musical outlet for kids. Formerly known as the Saints Drumline Inc. the organization with its original six members grew to include as many of 40 youth, performing as a unit styled after Historically Black College and University Bands (HBCU) such as Jackson State, Grambling and similar. As the Saints Drumline the organization was integral in providing a community drum line experience allowing some members to develop their skills in a safe environment leading to many joining other ensembles and going on to higher education.

In late 2012, it was announced the organization would transition to a drum and bugle corps to provide a well rounded competitive adjudicated music education experience. The corps performs on G Bugles. The majority of the bugles are three valve instruments and as such, is one of a handful of corps participating in Drum Corps International competition that still continue to play in the traditional key of G, whereas the overwhelming majority of corps have switched to Bb/F marching and concert brass.

The corps performs at community focused events, along with competitions for SoundSport, Small Drum Corps Association, and private corporate events. Continuing growth of previous years, the 2016 corps traveled to Atlanta Georgia for DCI Southeastern Regional winning a Gold Medal, Whitewater, WI winning a Silver Medal and Best in Show, and Indianapolis winning a Silver Medal. For the 2015 Season, the corps performed in exhibition at two Drum Corps International Competitions; competed at two SoundSport events and a SDCA event. The corps won Bronze Medals at both SoundSport Indianapolis 2014 and SDCA Erie 2014 competitions.

Mission

Inspiring excellence through teamwork, discipline, and creativity in central Ohio, through the performing arts.

Traditions

  • At the start of each field competition, the corps enters from the starting line
  • The corps joins arms before or after each event and talk about things going on in their lives asking for support, friendship or more
  • The corps recites the "Saint's Creed" often to build morale and camaraderie
  • Other Programs

Since its inception, the organization has sponsored community programs for young people in the city of Columbus. Partnering with other local organizations to provide affordable music and arts education.

    Winter Guard

Founded in 2015, the Saints Winter Guard competes in the regional Ohio Indoor Circuit in the Independent Regional A Class. For the inaugural season, the Saints Winter Guard placed 1st or 2nd place at every competition leading into State Finals where they placed 3rd place winning a Bronze Medal.

    Boys & Girls Club Programs

Partnering with the Boys & Girls Club of Columbus in late 2014, the Saints sponsored and helped run multiple programs including show choir, drum line, and color guard for club members. This allowed for music programming to be included at no cost to young people in the Franklinton, Columbus, Ohio area resulting in a new ensemble called "Boys & Girls Club : BOOM" which performed at numerous events around the Columbus Area.
