History
The school was established as Colorado Technical College in 1965, with a focus on training former military personnel in technical and vocational subjects. In 1995, the institution gained university status and changed its name to Colorado Technical University.
The NSA and the Department of Homeland Security recognize CTU as a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. According to Colorado Tech, CTU has more than 70,000 graduates worldwide.
In 2013, Military Times magazine ranked CTU #1 Best for Vets in the category for online and non-traditional universities. By 2015, it was no longer listed in Military Times' "best for vets."
Colorado Tech's parent company, Career Education Corporation, has been under investigation by Attorneys General from several states and the US Federal Trade Commission for deceptive recruiting and lying about accreditation and job placement rates.
Funding
CTU receives approximately 95% of all funds from the US government, including about $3 million from the Department of Defense and $33 million from GI Bill funds.
Campuses
The university maintains Colorado campuses in Colorado Springs (main campus) and Denver, which has one campus: in Aurora. Additionally, a number of its degree programs can be completed entirely or largely online.
CTU-Colorado Springs, the main campus, has been classified by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education as a Doctoral/Research University (D/RU) that is Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (STEM) dominant.
The CTU campus in Sioux Falls, South Dakota is scheduled to close in September 2016.

Colorado Technical University (CTU) ranked tied for 58th on the U.S. News & World Report lists for Best Online Programs for 2015. CTU was recognized for its online bachelor's degree programs. It placed 18th for master's degrees in computer information technology and 22nd for master's degrees for criminal justice.
In 2015, Colorado Tech had 155 complaints from military veterans who used the GI Bill feedback system. That ranked the school fourth highest in complaints, behind University of Phoenix, ITT Technical Institute, and Devry University.
Lawsuits, investigations, and financial problems
In 2013, Career Education Corporation, Colorado Tech's parent company, settled with the New York Attorney General for deceiving students about accreditation and placement rates.
The Attorney General of Connecticut is serving as the point of contact investigations for attorneys general investigations from the following states: Arkansas, Arizona, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington (January 24, 2014); Illinois (December 9, 2011); Tennessee (February 7, 2014); Hawaii (May 28, 2014 ); New Mexico (May 2014); Maryland (March 16, 2015); and the District of Columbia (June 3, 2015). Career Education Corporation has also received inquiries from the attorneys general of Florida (November 5, 2010), Massachusetts (September 27, 2012), Colorado (August 27, 2013) and Minnesota (September 18, 2014).
Colorado Tech is currently under heightened cash monitoring by the US Department of Education to provide additional oversight of cash management
