Based on the principles of Risk (but without dice rolling), in Colonial Conquest, the player controls armies and ship in order to take control of the world. The game matches the historical context of the Scramble for Africa and the scenario begins in the year 1880.

The player can select one of the six major powers of the time: England, Germany, France, United States, Japan, and Russia.

The land and naval forces of each country have different attack and defense values, as well as different costs: For example, Russia spends three times less money for the recruitment of its ground troops than England but in return the Russian offensive and defensive value will be much lower than that of their British counterparts.

Three scenarios are available:

  • Standard Game (None Of the Major Countries has any overseas colonies)
  • 1880: Race For The Colonies (beginning of the large-scale colonization)
  • 1914: Brink Of the War (the forces of the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance clash)
  • 2005 remake

The source code of the original game was decompiled and then rewritten in high level language by an enthusiast from 2005 on. Several improvements were made to the game (map editor, statistics, playability) without distorting it, like keeping the original graphics or reproducing the behavior of the artificial intelligence (AI). This remake was called CoCoNet because it features netplay - a multi-player mode via LAN or Internet which was not included in the original versions of the game.

    2015 remake

A crowd-funded remake equally entitled Colonial Conquest was realized on Kickstarter by developer Argonauts Interactive and publishers Plug In Digital/Argonauts Interactive. It was released on the Steam platform on July 28, 2015 and is a complete remake of the game with updated visuals, sound-effects and music. The current version does not yet feature a multi-player mode over LAN or the Internet.

    Colonial Conquest II

A game titled Colonial Conquest II has been released for Amiga on August 1, 1994. However, Colonial Conquest II is entirely unrelated to the original game by SSI. Instead, it is a futuristic strategy game set in space, similar to Sid Meier's game Civilization.
