College of Engineering, Trivandrum

History

On 3 July 1939, the college formally came into existence. The institution owes its foundation to the vision of His Highness the Maharajah of Travancore, Sree Chitra Tirunal Balarama Varma. It initiated in the former office and bungalow of the Chief Engineer (which is now the office of the Postmaster General (PMG)). Maj. T. H. Mathewman was appointed as the first principal of the college with Vastuvidya Kushala Sri, Balakrishna Rao and Prof. D. L. Deshpande on the faculty. The college had an intake of 21 students each for the Degree courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical branches of Engineering, under the then Travancore University.With the establishment of the Directorate of Technical Education in the late 1950s, the college administration came under the direct control of the Government. In 1960, the college was shifted to its present 45 hectare campus at Kulathoor. The undergraduate and postgraduate courses are accredited by AICTE. The college has a library, a central computing facility and a planetarium.

General information

The college began on 3 July 1939 as a part of the erstwhile University of Travancore, Kerala, India. The college campus is situated in Kulathoor near Sreekariyam, 13 km from Thiruvananthapuram Central (railway station). Extending over 125 acres (500,000 m²) of land, it has one of the most spacious campuses in the country.

The main building resembles a spanner from the air, around which are spread the departmental buildings, library block, laboratories, workshops, hostels, a planetarium, staff quarters, and stadiums. The campus is one of the greenest in the country, and has won accolades from environmentalists and nature enthusiasts alike.

In 1990, the Department of Science and Technology, government of India, ranked the college as one among the high ranking institutions in comparison with the performance of National Institute of Technology(NITs) in the area of training and placement. It is one of the few technical institutions in South India, which admits students mostly on a merit basis through an All Kerala Engineering Entrance Examination. Admission to this institution requires good ranks in this examination. Besides the regular B.Tech, B.Arch, M.Tech, M.Plan and MCA programmes, the college also conducts Part Time B.Tech and M.Tech classes for meritorious Diploma Holders. There is Lateral Entry Scheme to admit meritorious Diploma holders to the Second Year/Third Semester of the B.Tech courses to acquire a Degree in Engineering based on a State level entrance examination.

The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research IISER, Thiruvananthapuram functions from the campus. The college also extends lab facilities to the students of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram. There is a proposal to convert CET to a Centre of Excellence, upgrading it to a 'Kerala Institute of Technology(KIT)'. Then a Technical University can grow around it. The college has a student community which runs technical and cultural inter-collegiate festivals. There are several unusual aspects at CET, including a lingo of its own and customs such as 'Demo Week', where final year students dress up according to themes.

Masters of Business Administration (MBA)

The Department of Business Administration, renamed as CET School of Management, provides full-time and evening courses for MBA. CET started its MBA programme in 1985 as a part-time course and the MBA full-time course was started in the year 2000 as per Government of Kerala initiative for providing quality management education. The MBA full-time course currently has an annual intake of 120 students. From the year 2015, the MBA programme of the School is affiliated to Kerala Technological University and follows trimester system. CET-MBA is one of the premier management programmes in South India.

Electives are offered in the following areas of specialisation (dual): Marketing Management, Finance Management, Systems Management, Human Resources Management, Operations Management.

Kalpatha, the annual national conference organised by CET School of Management, is dedicated to uphold the recent trends and issues in management and intended to bridge the gap between the corporate world and academia. Kalpatha, over the years, is graced by prominent speakers from the industry and has seen unprecedented response from both industry and academia, alike. .

CET School of Management, organised its Kalpatha 2014 during December 5–6, 2014 at Trivandrum. The theme of Kalpatha 2014 was "Social Innovation for the New Age India". YAMISTHA is the National Level Management Fest of CET School of Management which started off in July, 2012. The fest is organised mainly to portray the Corporate Social Responsibility among budding managers. It is organised as a fund raiser for charity. YAMISTHA 2014 was held during September 26–27, 2014. YAMISTHA is emerging as a major management fest with the number of participants and participating colleges increasing every year.

Master of Computer Applications

The MCA department came into existence in the late 1980s. The intake is 60 students per year. The selection process is based on the All Kerala entrance examination conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Thiruvananthapuram.

The National Board of Accreditation (NBA)has accredited the following courses of the college.

Benefits of the NBA accreditation are AICTE preferential funding, top preference from companies conducting campus interviews, exemption from undergoing eligibility tests for higher studies and employment in foreign countries that have a tieup with NBA.

Facilities

Electrical Engineering Testing Lab

The testing centre of the Department of Electrical Engineering has been started in 1977. Later the lab was accredited by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). It is also accredited by NABL on 23 December 2010. The lab has the facility of doing all type tests as per IS 13010-2002 and 13779-1999.

ISTE Student Chapter

The ISTE(Indian Society for Technical Education) Student Chapter is the largest technical society in the college with more than 80% of the student body as its members. It provides a platform for students to showcase their talents. Ever since its formation, ISTE Students Chapter has helped its members scale heights of technical excellence through the numerous events it has conducted. The ISTE Student Chapter has successfully organised intra-collegiate tech fests such as Prarambh, Exodus, Semfiesta and Persona along with several talks, workshops, quizzes and business events every year. There have been two National Level techfests 'Aavishkar' in 2006 and 2009. ISTE CET is the best ISTE student chapter in India.

IEEE Student Branch

IEEE activities in CET were initiated on 15 June 1983 as student branch under the Kerala section. It was revived in the year 2008. As of January 2012, CET IEEE Student Branch has around 100 student members. The Student Branch has a library. One affinity group called IEEE Women in Engineering is running under this Student Branch and two societies namely Computer society and Communication Society. The student branch won many prizes as well as represented the college in many international avenues, including the best website award in the Asia Pacific region in 2010, represented Kerala in the Asia Pacific Student Congress at New Zealand, won prizes in the student poster and paper contest at the Global Humanitarian Technology conference at Seattle etc. The team of student branch officers consists of chair, vice-chair, treasurer and secretary.

SAE Student Chapter

CET also has a student chapter of SAE- the Society of Automotive Engineers, the century old society Thomas Alva Edison, Henry Ford and numerous other greats were members of. Students from CET have participated in SAE INDIA National competitions like the Baja and Efficycle. SAE INDIA CET regularly holds educative sessions on automotive technology- from bicycles and skateboards to trains and rockets. The student chapter also trains students in CAD.

IET Student Branch

The IET(Institution of Engineering and Technology) is one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community, with more than 160,000 members in 127 countries and offices in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. The Institution of Engineering and Technology Students chapter in College of Engineering was initiated in 2009. The IET CET http://ietcet.org has a library and an embedded systems research lab at the college. It has over 125 members in the college. The IET Chapter in the College won the Best Chapter Award under the Chennai Local Network in 2009. The Chapters activities include conducting workshops, seminars and technical competitions. Innovation Challenge is an annual event hosted by the Chapter to ignite the Innovation passion among the engineering Students of Kerala.

Innovation Centre CET

The Innovation Centre is a lab facility operated for the students by the students of CET. It was established in May 2012 and has become the den of geeks and Greeks in the college. Unlike most other technical organisations in the college, Innovation centre is government funded (by CERD). The Innovation Centre is open 24 x 7, with supervision. The facility also organises talks and training sessions in technical activities and also acts as a think tank where students meet to discuss their ideas on technical advances. In addition to it activities within the college, Innovation Centre CET hosts EUREKA, a statewide project competition annually. It is also a guidance center where students get advice and help for their projects and tech related activities. Working in unison with the IPR cell and the Technology Business Incubation (TBI) facility, the Innovation Centre also helps students in patenting and marketing the technologies they develop.

Entrepreneurship Development Cell

The Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) is a fully functioning student body registered under the Technology Business Incubator of the College of Engineering Trivandrum. The club provides a platform for students with ideas to convert them into business reality. The stated aim of EDC is to foster a student start-up culture in the institution. Club activities include seminars by world-renowned firms such as Blackberry, classes on the basics of the Stock Market, sponsorship activities, talks with prominent start up ventures and trips to events all over India like Hackathons and Entrepreneurship Conferences. The Entrepreneurship Development Cell, started in late 2011, already has 3 start-ups registered under it.

NSS CET

The National Service Scheme primarily stands for channelising the student youth for building the nation. The youth in all ages has been in the vanguard of progress and social change. On 18 October 2006 NSS CET (with unit no. 147) was inaugurated. NSS is now the most active organisation in the college. NSS cet is now capable of conducting even more than 25 programmes a year in midst of a busy academic schedule. Also from a bunch of students at the time of formation, the number of NSS volunteers is now more than a hundred. Also NSS cet is now an established one with a website and a special room for its activities.http://www.nsscet.org Last year NSS even came up with an Alumni section, a rare thing for an organisation in college. As part of the new requirement of A.P.J.Kalam Technological University, a new unit of NSS was started

RoboCET

RoboCET is the robotics club of CET formed by a group of robotic enthusiasts among the students of the college. RoboCET was established in April 2008. The activities of this club include conducting classes, workshops and exhibitions on robotics. RoboCET has organised various robotics competitions inside and outside the college. This club is renowned for the achievements of its members in different robotics competitions conducted annually in various colleges in South India.

CET FOSS Cell

CET FOSS Cell consists of students and faculty from College of Engineering, Trivandrum who strongly believe and support the concept of Free and Open Source Software by sharing their knowledge on opensource programming languages, frameworks, customisation, all under the platform of GNU/Linux.

CETALKS

CETALKS is a talk series program that was initiated in January 2015 during the 75th anniversary celebrations of the college. Eminent personalities from various fields of expertise address the college audience under this program. CETALKS is a regular dose of inspiration to students and faculty alike. Societies such as SAE INDIA CET, Innovation Centre and STEAM tables have organised professional discourses under this banner.

STEAM tables

STEAM tables is an in- college research oriented discussion platform that is devoted to promote technical discussions and to identify niche problems in different arenas that could be solved by engineering. The objective is to improve the quality of research and student projects from the college.

Dhwani

Dhwani is the annual cultural festival of CET. It is known for its organisation and activities. It is a four-day-long event held every year and attracts a crowd of 40,000 students and young people from across the country, making it one of the largest such fests in Kerala. Dhwani events include speaking, dancing, thespian, quizzing and word games, professional shows (nicknamed proshows) and workshops on music, fashion, art, and dance.

Drishti

Drishti is the annual technical festival of CET. It is known for its organisation and activities. It is a three-day-long event held every year and attracts a crowd of 5,000 students and young people from across the country, making it one of the largest such fests in kerala.

Department Festivals

Several departments organise department festivals.

1939 College started with three streams – Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering with 21 students per stream in a campus which is presently the office of Post Master General. The degree awarded was BSc Engineering.

1958 Started MSc Engineering courses in Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering (Hydraulics Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Electrical Machines).

1960 Shifting of the college into the present college campus.

1962 MSc Engineering course started under the Mechanical Engineering Department (Thermal Science Engineering and Machine Design).

1964 Department of Architecture was started with part-time faculty. Two more streams in MSc Engineering under Electrical Engineering course started (Control Systems, Power Systems). Department of Electronics and Communication started.

1965 Silver Jubilee celebration of the College of Engineering. The function was inaugurated by the prime minister the late Sri. Lal Bahadur Shastri.

1967 Department of Architecture expanded with full-time faculty.

1969 Part-time undergraduate course for Mechanical Engineering started.

1970 B.Arch degree instituted for the Architecture Engineering course.

1972 Post Graduate course in Microwave and Television Engineering started under Electronics and Communication Engineering Department.

1974 Part-time undergraduate course in Civil Engineering started.

1975 Part-time undergraduate course in Electrical Engineering started.

1976 MSc Engineering in Environmental Engineering started. Course in Architecture Engineering recognised by Indian Institute of Architects.

1977 CETAA constituted and constitution and rules approved in a general body meeting.

1977 Electrical testing lab started under Electrical Engineering Department.

1981 Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering started under Department of Electronics.

1982 MSc Engineering courses in Propulsion Engineering and Transportation Engineering started. BSc Engineering in Industrial Engineering started under Mechanical Engineering Department. Part-time undergraduate course in Electronics and Communication Engineering started.

1984 Centre for Water Resources and Management started. Career Guidance Placement Unit Started. MSc Engineering in Guidance and Navigational Control started. Started BTech course in Computer Science and Engineering. Started a course in Master of Computer Applications.

1985 Part-time course in Management of Business Administration started. Course Degree name BSc Engineering changed to BTech Degree and MSc Engineering to MTech Degree.

1986 Postgraduate course in Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering started. Course name Electrical Engineering changed to Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

1988 Part-time postgraduate course in Electrical and Electronics Engineering started. Postgraduate course in Architecture Engineering started. Part-time postgraduate course in Electronics and Communication Engineering and Applied Electronics and Instrumentation started. Part-time postgraduate in any one stream of the five streams in Civil Engineering started. Postgraduate course in Industrial Engineering started.

1989 Golden Jubilee Celebration of the College. Part-time postgraduate course in Electrical and Electronics Engineering started. Postgraduate course in Architecture Engineering started.

1990 Computer Aided and Drafting facility started in Department of Architecture. Part-time postgraduate course in Mechanical Engineering started.

1991 Implementation of IMPACT project in Computer Science and Electronics and Communication Departments.

1994 Centre for Computing Facility started. Architecture Department shifted to new building.

1996 An Extension counter of sub-treasury Kazhakuttam started. A one time BTech Degree course for Polytechnic teachers started in the Department of Civil Engineering.

1997 Sustainability support scheme initiated by Ministry of Information Technology is a continuation IMPACT Project in the Department of Computer Science Engineering.

1998 Continuing Centre for Education (CCE) started. Subtreasury started functioning in the college.

1999 Part-time undergraduate course in Computer Science and Engineering started. A project 'Networking' was sanctioned to Department of Electronics and Communication. Celebration of Diamond Jubilee Year of the college. Undergraduate courses in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering were accredited by AICTE; Civil Engineering and Electronics and Communication were awarded A grade and Mechanical Engineering was awarded B grade for 5 years.

2000 Full-time MBA course started

2001 ISO 9002 Certificate for 3 years was awarded to undergraduate courses in the Department of Electronics and Communication and Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The undergraduate course in Computer Science and Engineering was accredited by AICTE and awarded 'A' grade for 5 years. Applied Electronics and Instrumentation and Industrial Engineering undergraduate courses were accredited and awarded 'B' grade for 5 years.

2006 New postgraduate course in Signal Processing. Electronic C-Dot Exchange commissioned and all departments are connected through EPABX Campus Networking.

2008 Implemented 'CampusSoft' – Software to automate all the process from Admission to TC. Department of Computer Application developed and maintain the software with a high degree of proficiency.

2008 Inauguration of the 'Golden Walkway', A project supported by 1958 Batch Alumni.

2009 A research park at a cost of 1 billion proposed modelled on IITM Research Park, for Industry Institute Interaction. Inauguration of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Block.

2009 DHWANI 09, attracts a large footfall. Pro show by Karthik.

2010 CETEX 2010, Open House and Exhibitions for four days on CET Campus, attracts 20000 people.

2010 Electrical Testing Lab accredited by NABL on 23 December 2010

2011 Department of Computer Science celebrates its 25th year. A National level Technical fest DOTSLASH 2011 was conducted by the Department.

2011 Samskriti 11 Department of Civil Engineering celebrated its annual technical fest and cultural night. Both events attracted huge crowds and famous performers.

2013 Electrical testing Lab Accredited by BIS

2014 Inauguration of 75th Platinum Jubilee Celebrations by the Honorable President of India His Excellency Shri. Pranab Mukherjee on July 18, 2014.

2014 YAMISTHA 14, National Level Management Fest on September 26,27 organised by CET School of Management.

2015 DHWANI 15, National Level Cultural Fest was held on March 12–15 . This was the 10th edition of DHWANI since its inception in 1999. Mohit Chauhan and Laghori did the proshows.
