Hutchins was crowned as Brigham Young University Homecoming Queen in 1947. In September 1951, she was crowned as Miss America, the first Miss Utah to win the pageant. Hutchins was a native of Arcadia, California. She was the sister of basketball player Mel Hutchins, the mother of former NBA player Kiki Vandeweghe and Olympic swimmer Tauna Vandeweghe, and the grandmother of professional tennis player Coco Vandeweghe.
