History

On October 19, 2015, Cogeco Cable Inc. announced the unification of two of their subsidiaries, Cogeco Data Services and Peer 1 Hosting.

Cogeco Data Services was a wholly owned subsidiary of Cogeco Cable Inc. that offered a suite of ICTservices. Cogeco Data Services supplied its customers with the ability to access, manage, move, and store large amounts of data worldwide.

  • On April 1, 2008, Cogeco acquired MaXess Networx, a division of EnWin Utilities.
  • On June 13, 2008, Cogeco acquired the Telecommunications division of Toronto Hydro, Toronto's municipal electric utility. On July 31, 2008, Toronto Hydro Telecom sold all the shares to Cogeco Cable Canada Inc. and became Cogeco Data Services.
  • On August 2, 2011, Cogeco Cable acquired Quiettouch Inc. and was integrated under Cogeco Data Services to complement their array of services.
  • On August 31, 2011, Cogeco Cable acquired MTO Telecom Inc. (the largest private telecom provider and fibre network operator in the Montreal greater area) and was integrated under Cogeco Data Services to expand CDS' presence in the Province of Quebec.
  • The company was founded in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1999 by Lance Tracey and Mark Teolis. From the beginning, the co-founders targeted small- and medium-sized business customers. Peer 1 Hosting offered colocation, dedicated servers, managed hosting, private cloud services, cloud storage, hosted email, and cloud-based graphics processing.

  • In 2004, the company acquired ServerBeach, a dedicated hosting provider located in San Antonio, Texas, for $US7.5 million.
  • In 2007, the company introduced an incubation program that combined discounted hosting services with consulting assistants. In 2010, the company built a new energy-efficient and green data center located just outside Toronto.
  • To provide Internet users with a visual perspective into online traffic flows, the company developed a graphical "Map of the Internet" that depicts the layout of all the networks that connect to form the Internet. Much of the data was collected from the Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA). In 2013, the company launched an interactive mobile app version.
  • On November 7, 2011, Peer 1 announced launching its new cloud division Zunicore.
