Lisbon and its metropolitan area has a Subtropical-Mediterranean climate (Köppen climate classification: Csa), with short and very mild winters and warm summers. According to Troll-Paffen climate classification, Lisbon has a warm-temperate subtropical climate (Warmgemäßigt-subtropisches Zonenklima). According to Siegmund/Frankenberg climate classification, Lisbon has a subtropical climate.

Its average annual temperature is 21.5 °C (70.7 °F) during the day and 13.5 °C (56.3 °F) at night. In the coldest month – January, typically the temperature ranges from 10 to 19 °C (50 to 66 °F) during the day and 4 to 11 °C (39 to 52 °F) at night. In the warmest month – August, the typically temperature ranges from 24 to 33 °C (75 to 91 °F) during the day and about 19 °C (66 °F) at night.

Temperature extremes

The highest temperature recorded during the day is 41.8 °C (107.2 °F), the coldest temperature recorded was −1.2 °C (29.8 °F) at night.

Precipitation

Lisbon has on average 117 precipitation (including drizzle) days a year (above 0.1 mm), ranging from 2 in July to 15 in January. The average annual precipitation is 774 mm (30 inches), ranging from 4.2 mm (0.16 inch) in July to 127.6 mm (5 inch) in November.

Sunshine

Sunshine duration is 2,806 hours per year, from 142.6 - average 4.6 hours of sunshine per day in December to 353.4 - average 11.4 hours of sunshine per day in July. This is the above average value for the southern half of Europe because in this part of the continent, sunshine duration varies from about 2,000 to about 3,000 hours per year. However, this is 70% larger value than in northern half of Europe, where sunshine duration is around 1500 hours per year. In winter Lisbon has about three times more sun duration than in the northern half of Europe.

Daylight

Lisbon enjoys one of the most optimal number of hours of daylight in Europe. Days in winter are not as short as in the northern part of the continent, the average hours of daylight in December, January and February is 10.3 hours (for comparison: London or Moscow or Warsaw - about 8 hours).

Sea temperature

Average annual temperature of sea is 17.5 °C (63.5 °F). In the coldest month – January, the average sea temperature is 15 °C (59 °F). In the warmest month – August, the average sea temperature is 20 °C (68 °F).
