City University of Seattle, also known as CityU, is a private not-for-profit institution of higher learning based in Seattle, Washington. In 2015-16, CityU enrolled 6,372 students worldwide. The university consists of the School of Management, Albright School of Education, the Division of Arts/Sciences and Management Institute. CityU of Seattle offers campus education around the world and online education.

History

City University was established in 1973 as City College by Dr. Michael A. Pastore to provide higher education for working adults. Over the years, the school has expanded its locations worldwide and negotiated partnerships with other educational institutions to offer certificate and degree programs. As of 2014, City University of Seattle has graduated over 50,000 students worldwide.

Accreditation

City University of Seattle holds regional institutional accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU).

In November 2013, the School of Management received full accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). The School of Management was previously accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE).

In addition to regional accreditation, City U's Project Management degree programs are accredited by the Project Management Institute (PMI.org) making City U only a handful of schools worldwide to achieve this accreditation.

    The university's School of Education is named after Dr. Gordon Albright, a long serving teacher and principal in the Seattle School District, who spent several years on the Seattle University faculty. He advised the university at its founding, laid the groundwork for its School of Education in 1989, and guided the approval of its teacher preparation by the State of Washington, and is also credited with the initial design of the Master of Education programs. He retired in 2000 and the School of Education was named in his honor.

    School of Management

    Although based in the Pacific Northwest, the university has established a presence around the globe by annually conferring degrees locally on three continents. Programs are established in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Mexico, Canada, Australia and China. The School of Management launched one of the first MBA programs in Eastern Europe in 1991 and one of the earliest government approved foreign MBA programs in China in 1996. This has led to partnership with local colleges and universities in eleven countries. In 1999, the university's business school entered a partnership with Institutul Bancar Roman and the Romanian National Bank to offer business education and training to commercial banks and financial institutions. A partnership was also formed with CETYS Universidad and Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León of Mexico to offer business education.

    Division of Arts & Sciences

    The division offers certificates and undergraduate or graduate degrees for individuals in the fields of communications, counseling, human services, or psychology.

    The School of Applied Leadership

    The school offers the Doctor of Education (Ed.D) in Leadership, a Master of Arts in Leadership, and a Master of Education in Adult Education programs.

    The Washington Academy of Languages

    The Washington Academy of Languages offers English language instruction, world languages, and TESOL programs.

    United States

  • Forbes Magazine listed City University of Seattle as one of the "Top Twenty Distance Learning Universities" in the United States. Fast Company performed an editorial review of five U.S. universities offering online degree programs, giving CityU a grade of A-. In 2008, OEDb, a for-profit organization, ranked CityU's online (distance learning) program as 28th in the nation. CityU is also published on the Bears' Guide to The Best MBAs by Distance Learning.
  • The University's Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team was the overall league champion of 2006 and 2007. It is the only SIFE team in North America that is made up entirely of international students and the only Western Washington team to advance to the national competition.

  • In January 2013 U.S. News & World Report (USNWR) ranked City University of Seattle’s bachelor's degree programs among the best online programs in their "Best Online Programs".

  • City University of Seattle's Business School joint partnership with the Beijing University of Technology was recognized by World Executive Weekly, a leading Chinese management periodical established by Nobel Prize winner in economics, Robert A. Mundell, as "The Top Ten Most Influential Sino-Foreign Joint MBA Programs" in China. After establishing programs in Bulgaria, City University of Seattle's MBA program is considered to be an excellent addition to the educational spectrum available in the Balkan region.
  • Swiss and Slovak branches

    The City University has a partnership agreement with the private BHMS Business and Hotel Management School in Lucerne. There the programs in partnership with the CityU are still offered and students from the closed site near Zurich were not allowed to transfer there.
