Founded in 1979, Christopher Grimes Gallery presents a diverse yet rigorous program of contemporary art in a variety of media including painting, photography, installation, performance, sculpture and video. The gallery has been involved in the early development of the careers of artists such as Katharina Grosse, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Ernesto Neto, Fred Tomaselli, and Lisa Yuskavage.The gallery actively works with emerging and established artists such as Antonio Ballester Moreno, Kota Ezawa, Lucia Koch, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Julião Sarmento, and Allan Sekula.


Locations

Before its present location at 916 Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica, the gallery had two other locations in the Los Angeles area, both also in Santa Monica. From late 1988 until early 1989, the gallery was located on 12th Street. The gallery moved to 17th Street, where it remained till late 1991.

Exhibitions

Since 1979, Christopher Grimes Gallery has mounted close to 300 solo and group exhibitions. Most notable are:

  • Mr. Sterling's Neighborhood, July 10 - September 4, 1993: Group show including Chris Burden, Llyn Foulkes, Mike Kelley, Paul McCarthy, Kiki Smith, Lisa Yuskavage, and other important artists.
  • Amnesia, July 1 - September 12, 1998: A gallery curated exhibition that which included 16 artists (Waltercio Caldas, Ernesto Neto, Tunga, Oscar Muñoz, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Roberto Obregon) from 4 South American countries (Columbia, Argentina, Venezuela and Brazil). The exhibit traveled to the Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnati, OH; Bibilioteca Luis Angel Arango, Bogata, Colombia; Contemporary Art Museum, Tampa, FL; and the Bronx Museum, New York, NY.
  • 25th Anniversary-The LA Years, Part I and Part II, February 28 - April 3, 2004 (Part I), April 10 - May 25, 2004 (Part II).
  • Super 8, July 9 - September 3, 2011: A group show of 40 video artists from 8 international cities. The gallery organized this artist curated exhibition which traveled to the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA; the Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, Germany; and the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

    • The gallery participates annually in local and international art fairs, such as Art Basel, Miami, Art Los Angeles Contemporary, ARCO, Art Forum Berlin, LOOP Barcelona, Art Brussels, SP-Arte, and VOLTA.
