The 2009 Down Beat Critics' Poll ranked Howes at #2 under "Rising Stars/Violin". The Minneapolis-St. Paul Star-Tribune called him "the finest, fieriest jazz violinist since Billy Bang". Howes is the brother of entrepreneur Lewis Howes.
In 2011 Howes was awarded "Rising Star Violin" ranked #1 for Down Beat Critics' Poll.
