Biography
Chou Yu-Cheng was born in Taipei, and received a BFA from the National Taiwan University of Arts in 1999 and an MFA from the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2007. A graduate from the research programme La Seine, he received the Taipei Art Award in 2012 and the Taishin Annual Visual Art Award in 2011.
Chou is represented by Edouard Malingue Gallery in Hong Kong and currently resides in Taipei.
Work
Having exhibited at Edouard Malingue Gallery, Hong Kong; the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin; the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CFCCA), Manchester and Taipei Fine Art Museum, Taipei amongst other locations, Chou is internationally recognised for his dialectical interplay between the source and results of his creations. ‘TOA Lighting’ (2010), for instance, unveils the mechanism of art production and organisation, whilst ‘A Working History – Lu Chieh Te’ (2012) examines the underlying communications between private and public spheres. His seminal wallscape ‘Chemical Gilding, Keep Calm, Galvanise, Pray, Gradient, Ashes, Manifestation, Unequal, Dissatisfaction, Capitalise, Incense Burner, Survival, Agitation, Hit, Day Light’ (2015–present), which explores the psychological fluxes of urban living and capitalism, will travel to Taipei following its presentation at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin and Edouard Malingue Gallery, Hong Kong.
Chou’s work is held in multiple museum collections including the Hong-gah Museum, Taiwan and CFCCA, UK, and will be presented at FIAC, Paris by Edouard Malingue Gallery in 2016.
