He is currently a non-executive director of a number of companies including DeBeers Sa, Investec Bank, Persimmon plc and chairman of Arsenal football club. He replaced Peter Hill-Wood, who stepped down due to health reasons. He has been involved in a number of other business interests as well as serving as a director of the Bank of England since 1993.
