Chesham library top 5 facts

Chesham Library is a public library in the centre of Chesham, Buckinghamshire. It provides books, magazines, audio-visual items and local information.

Contents

It is located between Lowndes Park, Sainsbury's supermarket and the main high street.

Situated on Elgiva Lane, the library was built between July 1970 and the summer of 1971. Since it was built, the building has had few structural modifications besides a glass-walled seating/meeting area, and the provision of a lift for disabled access between the library and study centre. Internally the library has been remodelled on at least one occasion.

Chesham Study Centre on the first floor has a wide selection of reference books, computer and business books for loan, ten public access computers, WiFi provision a brand new photocopier and a fax for public use. It also has the Bucks Examiner archive on microfiche, as well as a number of daily newspapers and periodicals.

History

There has been a public library in Chesham since 1923. On September 28 of that year, a small room in Cemetery Lodge on Berkhamsted Road was designated and, even though it wasn't ideal, it remained there for four years. In October 1927, Chesham Urban District Council moved into new premises at 33 High Street on the Broadway, and the library was transferred to the top floor of that building. The library was run by volunteers from then until 1948 when a more established service was set up at the Broadway premises. In 1952, a children's section was added.
