Resignation
On July 17, 2023, Cheng and Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin resigned from the People's Action Party (PAP) and Parliament due to personal conduct issues, including an affair since 2020 confirmed by PM Lee Hsien Loong. Lee deemed their resignations necessary to uphold PAP's standards. Their vacancies in Tampines and Marine Parade GRCs were covered by other MPs.
