Chelsea is a town in and the shire town (county seat) of Orange County, Vermont, United States. The population was 1,250 at the 2000 census.

Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 39.9 square miles (103.4 km²), of which 39.9 square miles (103.4 km²) is land and 0.04 square mile (0.1 km²) (0.05%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,250 people, 495 households, and 324 families residing in the town. The population density was 31.3 people per square mile (12.1/km²). There were 657 housing units at an average density of 16.5 per square mile (6.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.08% White, 0.16% African American, 0.72% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.32% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.40% of the population.
There were 495 households out of which 29.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the town, the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who were 65 years of age or older.
