Content summary
The film chronicles how Harry Markopolos and his associates spent ten years of investigation in an attempt to expose Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme, which scammed an estimated $18 billion from investors.
The systemic problems exposed in the movie have not changed. Indeed, it is far harder for a fraud victim to prevail. In 2009, the Supreme Court required a plaintiff to establish his claim before any disclosure is required by the defendant. Labels and conclusions" and "a formulaic recitation of the elements of a cause of action" will not suffice. Thus, correct statements about fraud, when not supported by appropriate documentation, will lead to a dismissal of the claim. Absent supporting documentation, the culprit is presumed to be telling the truth and the victim to be lying or mistaken.
