Following the break up of Noah and the Whale in spring 2015, Fink announced on social media that new music was imminent. This new music came in the form of the single 'My Heartbeat Lost Its Rhythm', released onto SoundCloud by Fink on 1 July 2015. The song, featuring Fink's friends 'future-funk maestros' Sozo and Lux, also featured Doug Fink, Charlie's brother and former bandmate on drums. The release of 'My Heartbeat Lost Its Rhythm' sparked hope among many of a solo album to follow.

It was not until two years later that this hope became reality. Fink announced in early April 2017 the release later in the year of his debut solo album entitled Cover My Tracks, releasing a new song 'Firecracker' as a teaser for the project. At the same time, The Old Vic announced that Fink would be writing a new show with David Greig, also called 'Cover My Tracks' which will be performed in June 2017.
