  • 2012 When Democratic Representative Dennis P. Williams ran for mayor of Wilmington and left the District 1 seat open, Potter won the three-way September 11, 2012 Democratic Primary with 2,546 votes (63.9%), and was unopposed for the November 6, 2012 General election, winning with 9,321 votes.
  • 2006 Potter challenged incumbent Democratic Senator Harris B. McDowell III for the District 1 senate seat in the four-way September 12, 2006 Democratic Primary, but lost, taking second; McDowell has held the seat since 1976.
