Chaudhary Anil Kumar (Hindi: चौधरी अनिल कुमार) (born 20 June 1976) is an Indian politician who served as a Member of the Delhi legislative Assembly from 2008 to 2013. Previously, he was President of Delhi State Youth Congress (2008). He belongs to the Indian National Congress. As MLA, Ch. Anil Kumar gained popularity by initiating a series of developmental and constructive activities in his Patparganj constituency including construction of roads in West Vinod Nagar, Ravi Das camp, Nehru camp and other areas. He laid emphasis on education and besides opening new schools in Patparganj constituency, Ch. Anil Kumar is credited with making schools run in double shifts in order to make best use of available infrastructure and other resources.

Early life and career

Simple living and soft spoken Choudhary Anil Kumar comes from a politically active family. His ancestors took active part in India’s freedom struggle. And, thus, he has inherited a rich legacy in public life. Right from his school and college times Anil has been a public spirited person who took keen interest in politics. He was a student leader in his college days in Delhi University. He worked at different leadership positions in NSUI – National Students Union of India—the student wing of Indian National Congress. He was president of Dayal Singh College and subsequently councilor of Delhi University Students Union (DUSU). In the year 2000, he rose to become president of Delhi NSUI. He helped to give it a new thrust by organizing many rallies, blood donation camps and also held a rally to create awareness about AIDS.

Political career

Congress Party took note of his organizational skills and devotion to politics. He was given party’s ticket for Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in 2002 from Mayur Vihar Ward No. 69 which he won by a decent margin of 4421 votes. His popularity and selfless service to the public again got him elected from Mayur Vihar Ward No. 219 in 2007.

In the year 2008 Anil Kumar became President of Delhi State Youth Congress and was elected as member of Delhi Legislative Assembly (MLA) by defeating the BJP candidate Nakul Bhardwaj in a closely fought election in East Delhi’s Patparganj locality. Subsequently for the next term in 2013, he lost to Aam Admi Party’s (AAP) Manish Sisodia. As the Delhi Assembly has been dissolved the two are locked in a fierce contest again in 2015. Expelled Aam Aadmi Party MLA Vinod Kumar Binny is also contesting from the seat on BJP ticket. Elections for the Delhi Legislative Assembly will take place on February 7.

Personal life

Anil Kumar is known for his polite and people friendly manners. His popularity in his constituency rests on his relentless efforts to upgrade educational and sports facilities. Most schools in his area started running twin-shifts to accommodate rising numbers of learners during his tenure as MLA.

He speaks Hindi and English fluently and likes playing cricket and listening to music.
