The adult is 6–11 millimetres (0.24–0.43 in) long. It is seen in May through July on herbaceous plants and shrubs, mainly in meadows and woodland edges. It feeds on the sap of the plants. It can fly, but it more often moves by jumping.

It is black with bright red marks on the elytra. This species is very similar to Cercopis vulnerata, but its red stripes are smaller and the rear stripe is only slightly curved, while in Cercopis vulnerata, it is U-shaped. C. sanguinolenta also has a few black spots on the ventral plates of the connexivum, the lateral border of the abdomen.

The male is larger than the female.
