The Centre for Energy-Efficient Telecommunications (CEET) was a research centre focused on improving the energy-efficiency of the Internet. CEET was an autonomous centre based in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia and was connected to the Institute for a Broadband-Enabled Society. It operated from 2011 to 2016 [1]

CEET was a collaboration between Alcatel-Lucent Australia and Bell Labs, the Victorian State Government, and the University of Melbourne. The Centre's Director was Laureate Professor Rod Tucker until 2014, then Dr. Kerry Hinton.

Research

The volume of traffic on the Internet is growing exponentially and it is expected to continue this trajectory into the foreseeable future. Greenhouse gas emissions from the information and communications technology (ICT) sector are projected to increase significantly in coming years. Clustered around three themes, the research program at CEET was finding ways to reduce the energy consumption of telecommunications networks.

Modelling Program

Projects in the modelling program drove a deeper understanding of the energy consumption of telecommunications networks enabling the development of more sophisticated models. The research projects in this were:

  • Cloud Computing, Content Distribution and Information Logistics
  • Energy Efficiency of Next Generation Networks
  • Internet Services Energy Star Rating
  • Energy and Carbon Footprint of Universal Broadband
  • Transmission Program

    The transmission program explored techniques to reduce the energy consumption of the transmission equipment in telecommunications networks with the following research projects:

  • Energy Efficiency of Future Modulation Format
  • Low-Energy Fibre Access Networks
  • Energy Efficient Analogue to Digital Converter
  • Video Coding for Energy-Efficient Telecommunications
  • Fundamentals Program

    Projects in the fundamentals program explored the physical and mathematical properties of photons and electrons to enable the design and development of energy-efficient telecommunications equipment through these research projects:
