Background and recording

On 2 February 2013, You Me at Six begin working on Cavalier Youth. In June 2013, the band announced they would be entering a recording studio at a secret location to record their then upcoming album. On 20 June, vocalist Josh Franceschi announced all lyrics had been written and the band was ready to record the new record. Pre-production subsequently began on a day later.

In July and August 2013, the band announced they would be recording their album in Los Angeles, California with producer Neal Avron (Fall Out Boy, Linkin Park, Yellowcard). The band also worked closely with music photographer by the alias of GetDeluxe, who filmed the tour diary of the band's Spring Fever Tour with All Time Low and Pierce the Veil. Band members also updated their official Instagram profiles with the progress of the new album. Some of the drum tracks for "Win Some, Lose Some" were recorded through an iPhone in a basement to acquire a certain distorted sound.

Release

On 2 September 2013, the band announced and premiered the first single from the album, entitled "Lived a Lie". The album's title was also confirmed to be Cavalier Youth. The music video for "Lived a Lie" was made globally available on the band's Vevo channel, with UK fans being able to download the track on iTunes shortly after. The album was released on 27 January 2014. Following the album's release, the band embarked on signings and several live performances in which they encountered fans around the UK, in the stores HMV & FOPP, to promote the album throughout 27–31 January 2014. The band then embarked onto a tour in which they played shows in cities such as London and Cardiff, as well as exclusive album signings in Hull and Leeds. The band went on to announce a headline tour of Europe in support of the album prior to the album's release, playing twenty three shows, resulting in a sold out show at Alexandra Palace in London on 5 April 2014.

Five singles were released from the album: "Lived a Lie" (which became their highest charting UK single at number 11), "Fresh Start Fever" (another UK top 40 single), "Cold Night", "Room to Breathe", which charted highly on both the UK and US rock charts, and fifth single "Forgive and Forget", released on iTunes in December 2014.

"Room to Breathe" impacted US radio on April 8, 2014.

Reception

Cavalier Youth debuted at number one in the UK, selling 32,000 copies in the first week. Franceschi considered it " a big moment" for the band and "the start of something incredible for the [album] cycle". The album was included at number 7 on Rock Sound's "Top 50 Albums of the Year" list. The album was included at number 15 on Kerrang!'s "The Top 50 Rock Albums Of 2014" list.
