The Causeway Classic

The word "causeway" refers to the Yolo Causeway, which is a long bridge on Interstate 80 over the Yolo Bypass that connects Davis, California and Sacramento, California. The game was named in the 1980s. The schools met for their 50th time in the fall of 2003. The two schools also have Causeway Classic matches in baseball, volleyball, and track, but the trophy is for football.

History of the trophy

The carriage was donated by Sac State alumnus Jeri Striezik in 1960 to serve as the perpetual trophy for the schools. It was refurbished at the prison in Folsom, California and was first awarded in 1961. It was transported to the winning campus at the losing school's expense.

Today, the Carriage is no longer exchanged between the two teams; instead, a trophy made from cement from the Yolo Causeway is awarded to the winner.
