Life

Petra-Basacopol was born in Sibiu. She studied composition at the Bucharest Conservatory of Music from 1949-56 with Mihail Jora, Paul Constantinescu and Tudor Ciortea, and philosophy at the University of Bucharest from 1945-49. She studied at the Darmstadt Center for New Music in 1968, and received a doctorate from the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1962 she took a teaching position at the Bucharest Conservatory. Her music has been performed internationally, and she has won a number of honors and awards.

She has published a number of professional articles and a book, L’originalité de la musique roumaine à travers les oeuvres d’Enesco, Jora et Paul Constantinescu.

Works

Petra-Basacopol composes for orchestra, opera, chamber ensemble, harp, piano, vocal and ballet performance, often using themes and instruments from folk music. Selected works include:
