She has a fraternal twin sister, two-time US national figure skating champion and Olympic bronze medallist Gracie Gold, who is older by 40 minutes. Carly started skating a year after her twin sister in Springfield, Missouri. The family then moved to Springfield, Illinois, and Carly and Gracie trained in the Chicago area. In late 2013, the pair moved to Los Angeles to train with veteran coach Frank Carroll. Carly won silver at the Upper Great Lakes Regional in the 2012–13 season. The 2015–16 season was her strongest yet; Carly qualified for the 2016 U.S. Figure Skating Championships by winning gold at both the Southwest Pacific Regionals and Pacific Coast Sectional Figure Skating Championships. She finished 19th at nationals after coming 15th in the short program and 21st in the free. She and Gracie were the first set of twins skating at the senior ladies championships since Alissa Czisny and her sister Amber in 2003.
