History

On 28 April 1989, the Heads of Governments of the Caribbean Community established the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) by Treaty to rationalise the telecommunications policy framework for the region. The CTU was officially inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago on 19 July 1990 at a ceremony held in Port of Spain.

With the appointment of the 4th Secretary General, Ms.Bernadette Lewis in August 2003, the CTU defined a new strategic direction to ensure its relevance in an environment of rapid technological convergence. In 2004, the 7th General Conference of Ministers of the CTU, expanded the mandate to include information and communication technologies (ICT) and opened membership of the CTU to all Caribbean countries and private sector and civil society organisations with interest in ICT-enabled Caribbean development.
