CanniMed Ltd. is a privately held licensed producer of medical cannabis under the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR) governed by Health Canada. The Company was established in 2013 and is located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. CanniMed was the first producer to be licensed under the new MMPR regulations. CanniMed’s parent company, Prairie Plant Systems, has a history in the production of medical cannabis as the sole supplier to Health Canada under the previous MMAR program.

History

  • In April 2013, CanniMed Ltd. was established as the distribution and marketing arm of Prairie Plant Systems for the new medical cannabis industry in Canada.
  • In September 2013 CanniMed and Prairie Plant Systems were awarded the first two licenses by Health Canada under the Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR) governed by Health Canada
  • In November 2013 CanniMed was the first licensed producer to begin shipments of medical cannabis directly to patients. The first two products available were CanniMed 12·0 (12.5% THC & less than 0.5% Cannabidiol) and CanniMed 17·1 (17% THC and 0.7% Cannabidiol)
  • In June 2015 CanniMed announced the Health Canada approval of the CAPRI Trial (Cannabinoid Profile Investigation of Vaporized Cannabis in Patients with Osteoarthritis of the Knee), a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled, proof-of-concept, crossover clinical trial of single dose vaporized cannabis in adults with painful osteoarthritis of the knee.
