History

The Canadian Geographic Challenge was created in 1995, administered by Canadian Geographic Education.

Competition

The Canadian Geographic Challenge begins at the school level. Students in grades 4 through 6 compete only at the school level, but from grades 7 through 10, students can participate in further competition. School winners will be administered a Provincial Challenge test. The top scoring students from each territory/province will get a certificate recognizing their achievement.

The top twenty students (guaranteeing at least one competitor from each province or territory, given a minimum score of 50% on the Provincial Challenge) are then selected to compete in the National Finals held in May or June each year in Ottawa. The twenty competitors then compete in two preliminary rounds, consisting of a written test and a fieldwork component. From there, the top five scoring competitors proceed to the final game-show style round, which is open to the public.

The top three finishers in the final round are given cash prizes of $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000 respectively.
