Contents

Camp Roanoke opened in 1925 as Camp Lucius Johnson, a camp for boys. In the late 1980s Camp Roanoke closed, also in this time period the property on which the camp sits was purchased by Roanoke County as part of the watershed needed to construct nearby Spring Hollow Reservoir.

Roanoke County began fund-raising to complete renovation efforts in 1995 and the camp reopened. It is located on 110 acres (0.45 km2) of mountain land surrounded by 600 acres (2.4 km2) of reservoir property, with brilliant views of Sunset peak and the surrounding mountains. Facilities at the camp include accommodations for 64-80 kids, a dining hall, a pavilion, the high and low challenge course, a 50 ft (15 m) tall climbing tower, a multi-sport play court for basketball and tennis, and plenty of green grass and open space.

Campers can experience off-site high adventure activities such as rock climbing, caving, backpacking, kayaking, canoeing and multi-day trips.
