Café Barbera is an Italian coffeehouse and fast casual dining franchise registered with the International Franchise Association (IFA). It operates franchises in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, South America and the United States. The franchise began in Dubai in 2004, and is named after the first Café Barbera founded by Domenico Barbera in 1870 in Southern Italy.

Business concept

Domenico Barbera established his coffee roasting business, named Caffé Barbera, in 1870 in Messina, Southern Italy. In Europe, it is one of the oldest coffee companies. Café Barbera opened its first Corporate coffeehouse in Dubai in 2004. The first franchisee location opened in Dubai in 2008.

Café Barbera's franchise concept is a combination of the classic Italian coffee house with fast, casual dining. The menu focuses on fresh Italian coffee, Italian appetizers, pastries and panini. In addition, the company has focused on creating a casual atmosphere at premium locations in each country it enters.

Franchise operations

Café Barbera became a member of the International Franchise Association in 2015 and expanded its franchise units significantly by launching into seven new countries that same year. Café Barbera now has locations in Italy, Brazil, the United States, the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iraq, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Pakistan, Sudan and Somalia. The company opened its first UAE coffee house location in Dubai in 2004. It now has eight stores. Training for Middle East franchise holders is held in Dubai. The company expanded into Malaysia in 2010. By December 2015, there were six locations at airports and high-end shopping malls in Malaysia. The first Italian coffee house patterned after the franchise model opened in 2012. There were three locations in Italy by the end of 2015.

In 2013, the first franchised Café Barbera located in Brazil opened. There were two locations in Brazil at the end of 2015. The company also opened its first coffee shops in Qatar and Sudan in 2013, closing 2015 with three locations in Qatar and two in Sudan. The first Iraqi Café Barbera opened in 2014. The franchisor closed 2015 with three coffee houses in Iraq. The first franchises in Indonesia also opened in 2014.

Café Barbera entered Japan and Pakistan in 2015 with one location in each country. Store openings are scheduled for the United States, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the Philippines, Somalia and the United Kingdom in 2016.

Food safety

Café Barbera's appropriate standards for food safety were recognized in Lahore, after the Punjab Food Authority closed many eateries in the city.

Recognition

The quality of the coffee was recognized in 2013 by Circle K when it chose Barbera coffee for its stores in Dubai.

Café Barbera was recognized as one of the top five coffee shops in the UAE of Ras Al Khaimah.
