Cable 8 was created to give students hand-on experience creating, producing, directing, promoting and crewing TV shows while attending The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication. Students were already producing and directing newscasts for classes, but desired increased involvement and the opportunity to provide more dynamic content.

During the 2016–2017 school year, Cable 8 Productions celebrated its 30th year on the air with a special digital archive announcement and an official anniversary party.

About

Cable 8 Productions is run entirely by the students involved. With their faculty advisers, Marvin Marcelo and Kanale Rhoden, the organization is modeled after a working TV station. With production assistants and on-air talent; an executive board consisting of the President/general manager, Vice President of Television, Vice President of Special Projects, Vice-President of Marketing & Alumni Affairs, Director of Human Resources and chief financial officer; and a team responsible for the day-to-day operation of the station.

Cable 8 went on air with three original shows: Live at Eight, Video Underground, and a movie review show. Quickly becoming popular with the student population, Live at 8 won numerous national broadcasting awards and even had a guest appearance from actor Rob Schneider. Cable 8 students has consistently won campus, regional and national awards. Most notably a College Broadcasters Inc. (CBI) national award for best special broadcast for a one-hour documentary detailing their philanthropic program.

Since the mid-2000s, Cable 8 has been upgrading their Studio A facility to a full HD system. New items include the Sony MVS 7000X switcher and a line of Sony PMW-200s. Studio A in Jackson Hall is now a premiere college station on the west coast, rivaling many other high-profile schools.
