Profiles

CTV Morning Live is the name of the local morning newscasts airing on CTV's owned-and-operated stations in Western Canada, specifically, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina and Winnipeg as well as on CTV Two stations in Ottawa and Atlantic Canada. Each station produces its own version of the program. In areas where the program airs on a local CTV station, it airs in place of the network's national Your Morning (formerly Canada AM) program.

  • Atlantic Canada

The program in Atlantic Canada airs on CTV Two Atlantic, and was formerly known as Breakfast Television from its inception from 1992 to 2011.

At the time of the program's launch in fall 1992, CTV Two Atlantic was known as the Atlantic Satellite Network (ASN) and was a sister channel to Citytv (Toronto), as well as Maritimes CTV affiliate ATV, under the ownership of CHUM Limited. The program launched with a format similar to that of the Toronto version of BT, albeit with a greater emphasis on local musical guests. The program continued under its original name and format under licence from CHUM (and later Rogers Communications, which purchased Citytv in 2007) even after ATV and ASN were traded to CTV in 1997.

The show presently runs for two hours (7:00 to 9:00 a.m. AT), but in the past has aired for up to 2.5 hours (6:30 to 9:00 AT). The program has always been broadcast in full on ASN, although for several years (until 2008) portions not conflicting with Canada AM also aired on ATV.

Around 2002, the program had switched to a mostly pre-taped format. The show was relaunched on October 24, 2005 with a unique, more news-oriented format that differs from the Citytv versions of BT, resuming live broadcasts (for the most part) in the process. Coming around the same time as the cancellation of late-night news on ASN (later reinstated), this seemed to be designed to have BT count towards ASN's required hours of local news coverage. The main difference is that very few guests appeared in the studio live; instead, pre-taped segments featuring guests were shown. The number of guest appearances subsequently increased, with a guest in studio live every two or three shows.

    Vancouver

CTV Morning Live began airing on CTV Vancouver on November 14, 2011, broadcasting weekdays from 5:30 - 9:00 a.m. It is a revival of sorts of VTV Breakfast / CTV Breakfast, a program largely based on Citytv (Toronto)'s Breakfast Television, which aired on the same station during its time as the independent VTV (1997-2001). It was briefly retained, as an early-morning lead-in to Canada AM, when VTV became a CTV station in 2001, but cancelled in early 2002 after it was determined that the rescheduling had caused a significant drop in its ratings. Aamer Haleem, who was a host of VTV Breakfast for most of its run, initially served as a co-host of the revived program, but left in early 2014.
