Plot

The series is an investigative series consisting of criminal cases that are solved by the Crime Investigation Department. ACP Pradyuman (Shivaji Satam), Senior Inspector Abhijeet (Aditya Srivastava), Senior Inspector Daya (Dayanand Shetty) and Inspector Fredricks (Dinesh Phadnis) are an elite quadro of officers, who pursue criminals through detailed investigation along with their Sub-Inspectors and also seek the help of professional forensic experts Dr. R. P. Salunkhe (Narendra Gupta) and Dr. Tarika (Shraddha Musale) to solve high-profile cases.

The show initially used to air on Thursday nights at 10 PM IST for half hourly but was later changed to Friday nights. From 2006–2009, it used to air on Friday nights for one hour. On public demand (from 2010–2013), the show used to air twice a week i.e., Friday and Saturday nights from 10–11 PM IST. For sometime in 2014–2015, CID aired thrice a week from Friday to Sunday nights. In 2016, it aired Saturday and Sunday nights at 10:30 PM IST. From 2017, it airs Sunday nights at 10:30 PM IST.

Production

Marathi theatre veteran, Shivaji Satam, who plays ACP Pradyuman, had worked with B.P. Singh on many projects before C.I.D. "Having worked with B.P. on so many projects, I had to be a part of CID", said Satam. Dayanand Shetty (Daya) was spotted by Sanjay Shetty, a member of the C.I.D. production team in a community play in which Daya was adjudged best actor. Singh was so impressed with Shetty that he finalized him five minutes into the audition. His character is amongst the most popular ones in the series along with Satam's character, Pradyuman. Aditya Srivastava who portrays Abhijeet, was introduced in the show as a criminal but was later added into the C.I.D. team. "I had agreed to only 26 episodes. In 1998, I was also doing some films, but B.P. Sir gave me the flexibility to come and go as I felt like. But I began to enjoy the role of Abhijeet, and so stayed on", said Srivastava. Singh wanted Srivastava to be part of his team after seeing his work in Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya.

C.I.D. is primarily shot in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. During the long course of the show, the series has been shot in various locations all over India. The series has also been shot in foreign countries. Some Foreign locations have included places like Uzbekistan, a major shoot in Paris, and Switzerland which included tourist attractions like Interlaken as well as cities such as Berne and Zurich. The major shoot in Paris-Switzerland was for the CID special episode "Aakhri Chunauti", and a part of the production team's 12th anniversary celebration plan.

Other initiatives

C.I.D. set a record on 7 November 2004, when series producer B. P. Singh entered the Limca Book of Records for filming an entire episode named "The Inheritance / C.I.D. 111" in a single shot of 111 minutes (1 hour and 51 minutes) without a cut. The episode was shot between 6:30 PM IST and 8:21 PM IST on 8 October 2004 at Lonavala and was telecasted on Sunday, 7 November 2004 without a break from 8 PM IST to 10 PM IST.

CID: Special Bureau was a sub-series of CID which began airing from 27 December 2004. The series aired on Monday and Tuesday nights. On 29 August 2005, the series aired Monday through Thursday nights. The series delved into cold cases that had been left unsolved for many years. The show dealt with one plot being split into two episodes. The series ended on 2 March 2006.

Beginning on 7 July 2007, a nationwide hunt called CID: Operation Talaash was launched, in search of a new officer to join the C.I.D. team, which ended on 1 September 2007. Vivek V. Mashru was selected to play the role of a police inspector.

CID presented CID: Most Wanted in 2008 to mark and celebrate the 10th year of the series on Indian Television. Sony Entertainment Television had launched CID: Gallantry Awards, an initiative to encourage and honour acts of bravery in society on 26 January 2010 Republic Day. The second edition of this initiative was aired on 23 January 2011. The third and fourth editions were aired on 1 April 2012 and 14 April 2013 respectively.

The series had many crossover episodes with many series. CID had three crossover episodes with the series Aahat, once on 13 November 2009, second time on 12 February 2010 and third time on 25 June 2010. It also had crossover episodes with Adaalat, once on 3–4 December 2010, second time on 15 July 2012 titled CID Viruddh Adaalat and third time on 20 December 2014 titled CID Vs Adaalat – Karmyudh. It also had crossover for two weeks in July 2014 with the series Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah as Mahasangam.

CID introduced "Aakhri Chunauti" which began airing from 24 September 2010 and was divided into 8 one-hourly episodes with the two-hourly special finale episode aired on 17 October 2010. In that, CID dealt with the encounter of international don 'Harpeez Dongara'.

CID also introduced "Abhijeet Ke Ateet Ka Raaz" which began airing from 24 December 2010. It dealt with Inspector Abhijeet dealing with his personal life issues and his amnesic problems and his past life before entering the CID team. The series ended on 22 January 2011 with 10 episodes.

CID: Chhote Heroes was a sub-series of CID, which premiered on 1 February 2013. The series aired on Fridays' nights for one hour, where kids were shown finding a dead body, informing the CID cops about the murder and then helping the CID cops in their investigation.

On 10 July 2015, Sony TV announced the Shaatir Lekhak Contest, in which 3 incomplete stories and clues were presented. Contestants were required to complete any one story out of three. The contest ended on 26 July 2015. The winning story was appeared in episodes and prizes were also given to the winner. From the total entries, 3 winners were selected, one for each story. The result for the winners were declared during one of the episodes of CID prior to 1 September 2015.

Critical response

Rediff stated, "Its actors, or at least the core of the cast who have been a part of the series since its inception, ACP Pradyuman, Dr. R. P. Salunkhe, Senior Inspectors Abhijeet, Daya and Inspector Fredricks are so popular they have become household names."

Times of India stated, "CID which has constantly entertained its viewers with unique and challenging cases is also known for its different jokes in the world of internet."

Ratings

Rediff gave the series 4.5/5 stars, and stated, "Much of the credit for C.I.D's success should go to Singh, and its cast, especially Shivaji Satam who plays ACP Pradyuman."

Rahul Hedge of Rediff giving the same ratings stated, "The crime detective series is still going strong".

Accolades

In 2002, Indian Telly Awards, Fireworks Productions won the award for Best Continuing TV Programme, for Best Weekly Serial in 2006, 2009 and 2013 and for Best Thriller Programme in 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2012, while Shivaji Satam (ACP Pradyuman) won for Best Actor in a Lead Role in 2002 and 2003.

Pradeep Uppoor and B. P. Singh (producers) won Indian Television Academy Awards for Best Serial - Drama in 2002. They also won ITA Awards for Best Thriller / Horror Serial in 2003, 2004, 2009 and 2010, while in 2014, Santosh Shetty was nominated. ITA Awards for Best Teleplay in 2004, was won by Rajat Arora (writer), while B. P. Singh won for Best Director - Drama and for Best Videography in 2004. B. P. Singh also won Indian Telly Jury Award for Best Director (thriller/crime/horror) in 2004 and 2005, while Christabelle D'Souza and Santosh Shetty in 2009 and Nandu Kale (directors) in 2012 were nominated for Best Director (thriller/crime/horror). ITA Awards for Best Actor in a Negative Role was won by Makarand Deshpande in 2005.

Adaptations

The show is also broadcast by Geo Kahani in Urdu. A Bengali adapted version of C.I.D known as C.I.D. Kolkata Bureau airs on SET India's sister channel, Sony Aath.
