CDET (formerly referred to as the Council for Dance Education and Training) is the quality assurance and membership body for the professional dance and musical theatre industries. CDET was founded in 1979.

Mission

The organisation acts as the quality assurance body of the profession, providing guidance on courses, funding and qualifications to authorities, parents and students/ teachers. CDET sets out to ensure that high quality professional training is supported by:

  • Strong progression routes at the earlier stages of learning—specifically graded examinations, pre-vocational courses and Access to Professional Training programmes.
  • Valued advancement opportunities for proficient individuals and professionals going forward—including Continuing Professional Development, specialist diplomas and appropriate academic study.
  • CDET membership includes accredited schools, validated awarding organisations and affiliates. CDET's Recognised Awards scheme comprises recognised schools and recognised teachers.

    CDET validates offeris graded,vocational and diploma examinationsin the performing arts, carrying out quality assurance inspections and annual comparability studies of assessment standards.

    Affiliates

    Some programmes such as Access to Professional Training and Performing Arts Training focus on progression towards a specific role. Others, including Continuing Professional Development encourage reflective practice in a work-based context. Higher Education modules help users develop skills in research and analysis.

    Recognised Awards scheme

    Recognised Awards engage pre-vocational schools, delivering provision across the performing arts, with associated teachers holding specialist teaching diplomas in dance, drama, musical theatre and music.
