History
The name Buttala or ‘Bath hala’ which is said to have been given in the times of King Dutugemunu. A large number of soldiers located in the area . They had been fed from the plentiful of rice in Buttala. The names of many places have the history from the times of King Dutugemunu and Saddhatissa.
Industries
Buttala is the home of the largest Sugar mill in Sri Lanka Pelwatte Sugar Industries PLCwhich was established in 1981. The company provides livelihood to approximately 4,200 employees and over 300,000 out growers.
