But to bring a sword

"I came not to bring peace, but to bring a sword" is one of Jesus' most controversial statements because its meaning has many interpretations. The immediate context is the entire verse of Matthew 10:34, "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send [or bring] peace, but a sword."

Traditional texts such as the King James Version and the Geneva Bible refer to Jesus not coming "to send peace", whereas more modern translations such as the New International Version and the New King James Version say that he did not come "to bring peace".
