Business Growth Fund is a £2.5bn UK-based firm that invests UK-based small and medium enterprises. It was created in 2011 in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis by Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, RBS and Standard Chartered banks to support small and medium sized businesses with financial investment where otherwise under-served by traditional finance and private equity firms.

As of November 2016, it announced that it was on pace to have invested over £1bn in the UK by the end of 2016, including £174m in 24 companies in the north of England and £82m in the north-west of England. In total, the 155 companies in which it has invested employ more than 2,600 people and generate revenue of more than £360m. It has also invested £200m into BGF Ventures, its early-stage Venture capital arm.

The firm makes investments between £2m to £10m in businesses with typical revenues of between £5m to £100m.

BGF Ventures

BGF Ventures is a subsidiary of the Business Growth Fund, with £2.5B of capital under management. It is a London, UK-based venture capital firm that invests early-stage, primarily in UK-based technology and Internet startup companies. The firm claims to be the second most active venture capital fund in the UK in 2016.

History

BGV Ventures was founded in May 2015 to augment the reach of Business Growth Fund with a focus on smaller, more technology driven companies. They recruited a team of former venture capitalists to specialize in these investments, taking a minority non-controlling stake versus the typical private equity method of investing for controlling stakes in companies.

The partners of the firm are Simon Calver, formerly CEO of Lovefilm and Mothercare, Harry Briggs, previously at Balderton Capital, and Rory Stirling, previously a partner at MMC Ventures.
