Being a patient at broadgreen hospital

Broadgreen Hospital is a teaching hospital located in the suburb of Broadgreen; in the city of Liverpool, England. Alongside the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Liverpool University Dental Hospital in the city centre; the hospital belongs to and operates on behalf of the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Contents

The hospital shares its main buildings with Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Although the two NHS Trusts are completely separate from one another in the provision of services, they are often collectively referred to as Broadgreen.

Broadgreen Hospital also contains Liverpool's only broadcasting hospital radio service. Radio Broadgreen broadcasts live from within the hospital and broadcasts 50 hours of live programming a week through its dedicated team of volunteers.

History

Broadgreen was first established as an epileptic home and later as a sanatorium for the treatment of tuberculosis in the early 20th century, when it was then known as Highfield Infirmary. Following the bombing of city centre hospitals during World War II, and the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948; Broadgreen was expanded into a large district general hospital with a full range of medical and surgical acute services.

Following a review of local health care provisions within the city in 1989, and the ongoing reforms of the NHS; the conservative government of the time opted to close the hospital's accident and emergency department and centralise the facility elsewhere. Despite much local opposition to the move, some of which continues; acute services at Broadgreen were significantly downsized as a result. In April 1995, Broadgreen Hospital NHS Trust merged with Royal Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Trust to become Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust. Subsequently, all emergency and high dependency services including the A&E department and ICU; were later transferred to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

Instead, Broadgreen Hospital now acts as the main centre within the city of Liverpool for all elective general, urological and orthopaedic surgery, diagnosis and treatment. It also specialises in rehabilitation of the Elderly and in January 1996 a new eighty-bedded facility was opened on the site.

Notable patients

Bill Shankly, the former Liverpool Football Club manager, died at the hospital in September 1981 after suffering a heart attack.
