History

The idea of BSTF was first established in 1987 as a means of encouraging and helping university Taekwondo clubs to train together and host competitions. The first Student National Championships were organised in 1987 and were hosted by Southampton.

In 1991 a meeting was held at Manchester University to organize and further develop Taekwondo in universities. This was attended by senior instructors from across the country and was backed by master T. W. Shin. The result of this meeting was that the BSTF was formally established with a constitution which followed the BSTF’s original aims. The main purpose of the BSTF was to promote Taekwondo clubs and Taekwondo training within universities and colleges. They also aimed to include all students practising Taekwondo in universities and colleges irrespective of the different national bodies to which they belong.

BSTF was recognised as a charity throughout England and Wales in October 2016. The BSTF's charitable objects are, "The advancement for the public benefit of physical education among student in Universities and Colleges by the provision of services and promotion the martial are and amateur sport of Taekwondo".
