The Bristol Institute of Technology (BIT), formerly known as the Faculty of Computing Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, is a school of the Faculty of Environment and Technology at the University of the West of England.

Contents

BIT is a member of the Association of Aerospace Universities, and provides both under graduate and post graduate education.

Departments

The school is organized into ten departments:

  • Product Design
  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • Robotics
  • Music Technology
  • Information Science
  • Digital Media
  • Computer Science
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Research

The school has a mission to engage in research which is of direct relevance to industry, society and the environment. Research covers a wide range of subjects within the fields of mechanical, manufacturing and electrical engineering, computer science and computer systems, information systems and mathematics, statistics and operational research. Projects take place at local, national and international levels, enabled by the size and disciplinary diversity of the school. Collaborative partners and sponsors include the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Department of Trade and Industry, and the European Union.

Much of the research takes place in recognised Research Centres of which the school currently has eight. In addition research is also carried out by more informal research groups and by individual researchers in the ten school departments:

  • Aerospace Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) - AMRC
  • Centre for Complex Cooperative Systems (CCCS)
  • Centre for Innovative Manufacture & Machine Vision System (CIMMS) - MVL
  • Community Information Systems Centre (CISC)
  • Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) - a joint venture with the University of Bristol
  • Engineering and Medical Technology (EMT)
  • International Centre of Unconventional Computing
  • Aerospace Strategy Research Centre (ARC)
  • Research is also conducted into speech and language therapy in the Speech and Language Therapy Research Unit [1] based at Frenchay Hospital. The mission of this Unit is to improve the care and treatment of people with speech and language disorders by developing knowledge related to the prevention, treatment and social consequences of communication.
