In 2008, Ownby appeared in 19 games for the University of Virginia, starting in 14 of them. He scored five goals and added four assists. He was named to the Soccer America All-Freshman second team and to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region second team. He earned ACC All-Freshman team honors and was named to ACC All-Tournament team. Ownby appeared in 72 career games, with 50 starts, and finished with 21 goals and 10 assists for 52 points. The following year, he appeared in 15 games and started six matches. He finished season with three goals and one assist. Ownby was named to the 2009 NCAA College Cup All-Tournament team. He was part of squad that won 2009 NCAA men's soccer championship. Ownby also scored the golden goal against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the NCAA semifinal. In 2010, he earned first team All-ACC honors. Ownby named to the VaSID All-State second team. He appeared in 20 games and started 18 of them. Ownby scored seven goals with three assists for 17 points. In 2011, he finished senior campaign with six goals and two assists. Ownby earned second team All-ACC honors. He was also named to the third-team All-NSCAA South Atlantic Region team. Ownby scored goal in ACC tournament quarterfinal match in 4-3 double OT win over Wake Forest. He named Most Valuable Player of Hokie Invitational.

Professional

Ownby was selected by the Houston Dynamo with the 7th pick in the first round of the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft. After a month-long trial, Ownby was officially signed by the team before the start of the 2012 MLS season. On May 29, 2012, Ownby made his debut for the Dynamo in a 1-0 defeat to the San Antonio Scorpions in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

On March 22, 2013, Ownby was sent to the USL Pro side Richmond Kickers on loan from the Dynamo until September 2013.

Ownby is the son of Steve and Andrea Ownby, and he has a younger brother named Eric, who majored in Anthropology at the University of Virginia. He has three dogs, a Doberman Pinscher and 2 Australian Shepherds.
