Brett Hickey (born 1978) is a Canadian-American entrepreneur, businessman, private equity investor and philanthropist. In 2010, he founded Star Mountain Capital, LLC, an investment management firm focused on the U.S. small and medium-sized business marketplace. As of June 30, 2016 the firm had over $500 million in assets under management.

Early life and education
Hickey worked on drilling rigs in Alberta, Canada for Nabors Industries prior to attending college. He attended Mount Royal College in Calgary, studying economics and entrepreneurship. While living in Calgary, he was a speed skater on the Canadian National Training team. He graduated from McGill University in Montreal with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, with distinction (major in finance and concentration in accounting).

Hickey is a graduate of Harvard Business School's Owner/President Management program, a three-year executive program for business executives and owners.
Career

Hickey began his career as an investment banking Analyst at Salomon Smith Barney/Citigroup Global Markets in New York City, working in the financial institutions coverage group.

In 2010, Hickey founded the New York City-based Star Mountain Capital, LLC, and has acted as Chief Executive Officer since inception. He frequently speaks on private equity panels, at events and in academic institutions across the country about entrepreneurship and investing in the lower middle-market.

Philanthropy, accolades and awards

Hickey is the founder of Star Mountain Charitable Foundation. He has received multiple recognitions for his efforts including the Philanthropic Achievement Award from A Caring Hand (the Billy Esposito Foundation); Shinnyo-en Foundation's Pathfinders to Peace Award alongside Morgan Freeman, Mira Sorvino and Marc Ecko; Guiding Star local service award from the Alliance for Young Urban Design and the Arts (AYUDA).
Hickey has participated in multiple athletic fundraising events that have benefited cancer research organizations including The Terry Fox Foundation, Achilles International, and Cycle for Survival.
In March 2017, Brett Hickey is honored to be featured on SmartCEO's Future 50 Awards, with Star Mountain Capital being recognized as one of NYC's fastest growing mid-sized companies.
Personal life
Hickey was born in Canada. His parents were both schoolteachers and his mother died from cancer when he was six years old. He is married and resides in New York City with his wife and son.
