While the school has a reputation as an elite sports school, with programs in Football, Basketball and Tennis, it has an excellent reputation in the areas of Visual and Performing Arts.
Box Hill Senior Secondary College has no feeder schools, and new students are only selected after interview. The College is not related to Box Hill High School.
Box Hill Senior Secondary College is also the location of the Middle Years Sports Campus, which was established in 2005 for Years 5 to 9 students wishing to develop their tennis skills in addition to their daily academic program. In 2012, the Middle Years Sports Campus was expanded to include Year 9 students wishing to undertake basketball. Students of the Middle Years Sports Campus get access to all the Box Hill Senior Secondary College's facilities to help them learn.

History
The College began operating in 1993 as Box Hill Senior Secondary College. It was formerly Box Hill Technical School, and first became coeducational in 1985 when it merged with the Whitehorse Girls Technical School.
School uniform
Despite being a government school, uniform is not compulsory at Box Hill Senior Secondary College. However, uniform is compulsory for students attending the Middle Years Tennis School.
