Borawal (Punjabi: ਬੋੜਾਵਾਲ) is a town in Budhlada tehsil of Mansa district of Punjab, India. According to the census of 2011, Borawal has a population of 3950.

History

Borawal is considered to be one of the oldest towns in Punjab. According to historians, Borawal came into existence in early or mid-thirteenth century. Pt. Kartar Singh Dakha wrote 1945 in his verses that "In the town of Borawal in Patiala Raaj, there lives the Braveheart Sekhon people from 700 years" (Punjabi: ਕਸਬਾ ਬੋੜਾਵਾਲ ਜੋ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਟਿਆਲੇ ਰਾਜ। ਬਸੈ ਸਾਤ ਸੌ ਬਰਸ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਸੇਖਮ ਸਿਰਤਾਜ।।).

Demographics

Borawal has population of 3950 of which 2112 are males while 1838 are females, as per Population Census 2011. In Borawal village, there are 403 children aged between, making up 10.20% of total population of village. The average sex ratio is 870 which is lower than the Punjab state average of 895. The child Sex Ratio for the Borawal as per the census is 824, lower than the Punjab average of 846.

Borawal village has lower literacy rate compared to Punjab. In 2011, the literacy rate of Borawal village was 55.79% compared to 75.84% of Punjab. In Brawl, male literacy stands at 59.65% while female literacy rate is 51.39%. As per constitution of India and Panchyati Raaj Act, Borawal village is administrated by Sarpanch (Head of Village), who is the elected representative of the village.

Gurdwara Shaheed Baba Dharam Singh Sekhon

Located near the Bus Stand is a historical Sikh Gurdwara. This Gurdwara is built on the place where Shaheed Baba Dharam Singh Sekhon fought with the slaughterers of cows, in spite of cutting down his head.

Darwaza Baar

It is one of the four gates, that were used to protect the town from foreign invaders during the ancient times. Out of those four gates, only one is remaining.

Haveli Of Maharaja Hari Singh

The fort of Maharaja Hari Singh, the ruler of Kashmir, is located in middle of Borawal. According to historians, Borawal is said to be the maternal ancestral village of Maharaja Hari Singh.

Khaara Khoo & Mittha Khoo

There are the two wells (Punjabi: ਖੂਹ) located in Borawal. The Khaara Khoo (ਖਾਰਾ ਖੂਹ) is saline, and the Mittha Khoo (ਮਿੱਠਾ ਖੂਹ) has drinkable water. These wells have been preserved by the local people, although they are no longer in use in the modern time.
