Playing career
An Ontario native, Hughes played major junior hockey with the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League before he was drafted by the Hurricanes. He made his professional debut with the Hurricanes American Hockey League affiliate, the Albany River Rats at the tail end of the 2006–07 season, after signing a three-year entry-level contract with the Hurricanes on April 10, 2007.
In the 2011–12 season, Hughes played and coached for EHC 80 Nurnberg of the Bayernliga. On July 29, 2013, Hughes joined the Fort Wayne Komets from fellow ECHL team, the Alaska Aces, signing a one-year contract as a free agent. On December 12, 2013, he was traded by the Komets to the Gwinnett Gladiators in exchange for Mike Embach. On December 17, 2014 he was traded from Gwinnett to the Indy Fuel. He decided not to play for Indy due to "personal reasons" and was quickly traded to the Brampton Beast on January 14, 2015.
On September 2, 2015, Hughes opted to continue in the ECHL signing a one-year contract with the Cincinnati Cyclones. On the lead up to the 2015-16 season, Hughes opted not to report to the Cyclones deciding to retire from professional hockey.
