Formation and Development
Richards and Train met in 2007 whilst studying music at Brighton Institute of Modern Music, in Brighton, UK. They began playing together and performing live. They also recorded EPs and released them through social media. They toured around the UK, particularly in Brighton and London. In 2010 they supported Amanda Palmer on the European leg of her Evelyn Evelyn tour.
In 2011 the music video for their song "Trust" received over 100,000 views. Matt Lucas helped manage the band, as well as performing with the band at several of their shows.
In October 2011 Bitter Ruin's entry in the UK single charts, "Trust" was reported in the BBC News. The track placed at No. 19 in the UK Independent Singles Breakers Chart on Sunday 16 October.
In October 2012 Bitter Ruin recorded an EP at Elton John's Rocket Studios in London. The result, titled "The rocket Sessions", became the starting block for their 2014 album "Waves". The band also supported Ben Folds Five on their European reunion tour in December.
Kickstarter
In March 2013 Bitter Ruin launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of a home studio in which to record their next album "Waves". The campaign surpassed their target of £20,000 in under 12 hours and finally raised £33,000. The duo were invited by Kickstarter to talk about their experience at an industry conference at Somerset House, London on 22 October 2013.
New Management & Waves
In October 2013 Bitter Ruin signed to management company The Sunday Club; this marked an amicable end to Matt Lucas's role as co-manager. However, the band also self-released their album "Waves" under the label name Bitter Recordings on 12 May 2014.
Bitter Ruin released a single in January 2014,"Diggers". which has been reviewed by Q, Clash and the French Les InRocks, and received national radio play by the BBC and from the independent station Xfm.
