History
BitHeads was founded in 1995 by Scott Simpson, Paul Winterhalder and Rick McMullin.
In March 2007, the HeadGames division was launched to focus on outsourced video game development.
In May 2007, bitHeads acquired an independent game studio, RndLabs.
In 2011, bitHeads also acquired Bedlam Games, a 70-person digital media studio in Toronto. Together the two companies, dubbed "Ascension CrossMedia Inc"., targeted an emerging form of gaming called, “connected transmedia”. This allows one consumer to play a single game across television, a console like Xbox and mobile, providing application makers with virtual 24-hour access to their market. Revenue from Ascension has been estimated at $13 million.
This merger also created 14 new jobs within the company and made bitHeads one of Ontario’s largest digital media companies, alongside firms such as Silicon Knights in St. Catherines and Toronto’s Ubisoft. Ascension also does development work on computer programs for other applications, like Barbados-based Pyramidal Technologies’ bullet analysis software.
