Personal life

Born in Agra, she went to St. Mary's Convent in Nainital. She married Krishan Kumar Modi, the son of the late Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi when she was 15 and subsequently, had three children—Charu Modi, Lalit Modi, and Samir Modi. After marriage, she raised her children in Modinagar and thereafter moved to New Delhi with her family.

Business interests

As the first lady of the Modi empire, she took the lead on various enterprising projects varying from food and hospitality to high fashion and designer wear, despite being in a fairly conservative business family. She opened her first venture, Obsession— a boutique in New Delhi. The boutique showcased designs made by her as well as other designers after acquiring a loan of Rs. 700,000 to start her venture. The Ego chain of restaurants in New Delhi is Bina's brainchild as well. Ego Italian was the first to be launched in 1995, followed by Ego Thai and Lounge in 2002 and Ego 33 in 2003.

Bina Modi's foray into the fashion industry continued with the launch of "Bina's"—a designer brand which created hand-embroidered couture pieces with predominantly Indian designs. The "Bina's" fashion label gained international recognition after her collections were showcased all over the world. Her fashion label employs over 3000 men and women, giving highly skilled Indian craftspersons an opportunity to showcase their talents at an international level.

Apart from fashion and hospitality, Bina also plays a role in furthering Modi Enterprises' ventures in the travel and tourism and beauty industries. As the Chairperson of the Group's Family Council, she is responsible for aligning the long-term interests of the family members, taking proactive steps to ensure efficient succession-planning for the organisation as well as formulating the Group's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agenda.
