Born in Cork, Stanton first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-six when he joined the Cork senior team for the 1929-30 National Hurling League. Stanton went on to play a bit part for Cork in what has come to be known as one of the greatest teams the county ever produced, and won two All-Ireland medals and two Munster medals as a non-playing substitute, as well as one National Hurling League medal on the field of play.

At club level he won two championship medals with St. Finbarr's.

Throughout his career Stanton made just 2 championship appearances. His retirement came following the conclusion of the 1933 championship.
