Biju Patnaik International Airport (IATA: BBI, ICAO: VEBS), also known as Bhubaneswar Airport, is situated in the city of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. It is the sole international airport in the state. It is named after the former Chief Minister of Odisha, Biju Patnaik, who was also a famed aviator and freedom fighter. As of 2013, Bhubaneswar was ranked the 17th busiest airport in India by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) registering a 25.8% traffic growth over the previous year. On 5 March 2013, a new terminal (T1) was inaugurated by Minister of Civil Aviation, Ajit Singh. The terminal caters to all domestic flights while the older terminal (T2) has been refurbished to support impending international operations. The Government of India accorded international status to the airport on 30 October 2013.

Terminal 1

The terminal 1, inaugurated in March 2013, has a capacity of 4 million passengers per year and was built at a cost of Rs 145 crore. The new terminal has been developed by the AAI as part of the upgrade of 35 non-metro airports across the country. Terminal T1, a two-storied building with a total area of 18,240 square metres (196,300 sq ft), consists of 2 (3rd is also proposed to be I stalled) aerobridges, 4 elevators, several escalators, 16 check-in counters, 3 arrival luggage conveyors, a spa, and multiple seating areas. Apart from the Departure and Arrival Lounges, T1 terminal also has several other lounges, including VIP Lounges, Pal Heights Spa Lounge, Dakota Lounge and Mayfair Lounge. The terminal is environmentally-friendly, built according to green building standards, with sewage treatment plants and provision for rain water harvesting. The internal walls of the terminal are decorated with tribal motifs, designs, masks, and sculptures derived from Odisha's culture. The new terminal also has food kiosks, gift shops, bookstores, art galleries and handloom/handicraft kiosks. The terminal was built by Lanco Infratech (Octamec).

Cargo

Cargo Operations from Biju Patnaik International Airport airport resumed again on 27th January 2017. This has opened up the avenue for state exporters to export goods faster to middle east, far east & European destinations. Previously there was cargo operations from the airport between 1995 to 2003.

Connectivity

Biju Patnaik Airport is situated around 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) south of the city center. It is connected to the main city by Bhubaneswar City Bus (Route 207, Nandankanan — Airport) and other luxury coach buses. The Bhubaneswar Railway Station is 2 – 3 km from the airport. Various cab services such as CarzonRent, Ola Cabs, Uber, Meru Cabs, among others, also provide service from the airport to different parts of the city.

Awards and recognitions

  • On 26 September 2014, Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar, was awarded the CSR Kalinga Safety Award at Odisha State Safety Conclave 2014.
  • The Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar was ranked 33rd Best Airport Worldwide and 6th Best Airport in India, in a survey conducted by ASI's Airport Service Quality (ASQ), that studied 254 airports worldwide. On a scale of 1 to 5, Biju Patnaik International Airport scored 4.5.
  • Government of Odisha and Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Government Of India have jointly awarded the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar the Meritorious Performance Award 2015 on National Conservancy Day, for the various measures taken by the airport towards energy conservation.
  • Incidents and accidents

  • On 22 December 2007, an Indian Air Force plane from the Surya Kiran team crash-landed on the runway of Biju Patnaik International Airport. One passenger caught fire while three others were safely evacuated.
